On 25 May 2018 the Data Protection Act will become known as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
The GDPR is based upon the Data Protection Act and, if you are subject to this, the chances are you will be subject to the new GDPR.  However, there are some additional and differing requirements which all businesses should be aware of.  Additionally, you should ensure that all employees or anyone you outsource to are also aware of their responsibilities.
Like the Data Protection Act, GDPR applies to 'personal data.'  However, its definition of personal data is much more stringent and reflects changes in technology and the way organisations collect information about people.
It is important to note that the Government has confirmed that the introduction of GDPR will not be affected by the UK's decision to leave Europe.
For further information (and to keep abreast of any changes) it is important to visit the ICO website or view their Frequently Asked Questions

You can also take a self-assessment to find out if it applies to you and your organisation.  If you're still in doubt, give the Information Commissioner's Office a call on 0303 123 1113.
